Visitors Saint-Etienne were leading 2-0 when play was stopped in the 57th minute after flares were thrown onto the pitch by angry Montpellier fans.
The match briefly resumed – but it was soon halted when a fire broke out at the front of the Etang de Thau stand, where the most hardcore Montpellier fans congregate.
Both sets of players were sent back to the dressing rooms as the fire continued to burn.
After a 20-minute delay the match was abandoned.
