Furious Saint-Etienne fans stormed the pitch after the team was relegated from France’s top flight following a play-off defeat to Auxerre on Sunday.
Auxerre beat St-Etienne 5-4 on penalties after the two teams drew 2-2 on aggregate over the two legs.
The loss means St-Etienne will play in the second tier of French football next season.
Immediately after the penalty shoot-out, hundreds of St-Etienne fans sprinted onto the pitch at the Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium and began throwing flares towards their own players, who retreated down the tunnel.
The pitch invaders were then dispersed by riot police using tear gas.
